A Documentary Film About Education in Florida
Err on the Side of Caution is a documentary film that explores the current state of education in Florida. Recent legislation has put the topic of parental rights at the center of heated debates around the state. One side wants students to have near-unrestricted access to learning materials, while the other wants to maintain parental rights at all costs. The film takes a deep dive into this issue through the stories of people affected by it every day.
It is a must-watch for anyone who is concerned about the future of education in America.
Why "Err On The Side of Caution"?
"Err on the Side of Caution" is a phrase that has become critical to public education in Florida. It was first used in training sessions with the Florida Department of Education, who instructed media professionals to "err on the side of caution" when selecting library materials. Since then, its meaning has grown - for better or worse - for those on both sides of the debates surrounding public education in Florida.
Why Make This Documentary?
I spent most of my formative years in Florida, a product of its public school system in many ways. Even more, my mom was a teacher of 35 years in Florida public schools. Because of that, and my interest and concerns around human rights, I've had my ears to the ground about this legislation, as well as the impact it has had on friends, family, and teachers statewide. It finally became clear to me that others needed to see its effects for themselves.
It may not be long before the fight makes its way to other states.
